Ohio ccw classes

CCW Classes Near You In Ohio

Enter an address or zip code and click the find locations button.

A CCW license is no longer required in Ohio. But it's still a great idea to have one for two reason main reasons. First you can carry in the states that Ohio has reciprocity with. This privilege is afforded to all Ohio CCW licensees. Second you learn a lot from the required class. Pay special attention to the section on Ohio law. It could save your life or your finances.

What will you learn in class?

Ohio CCW classes are required to spend time on these four main topics:

  1. Safe handling and proper storage practices for handguns
  2. Safe handling of ammunition
  3. Knowledge and skills necessary to shoot a handgun in a safe manner
  4. Gun handling training

There is also a requirement to have 2 hours of practical training which includes range time and live fire experience.

Requirements to qualify for a license

In Ohio you must meet several minimum requirements before applying for your CCW license.

  • You must be at least 21 years of age and not a fugitive from justice
  • You must be an Ohio resident for at least 45 days
  • You must be a resident of the county (or adjoining county) where you apply for at least 30 days.

If you are a member of the armed forces and are stationed out of state or out of the country you are still considered an Ohio resident for purposes of obtaining an Ohio CCW license.

There are many criminal offenses that will disqualify you from obtaining your license.  Any felony will disqualify you as well as misdemeanors related to violence, assault, or drug trafficking.  This is not just for convicts but also for anyone who is currently under indictment or charged with one of these crimes.

Finally you must not be classified as a mental defective, be committed to a mental institution, or be subject to a civil protection order from Ohio or any other state.

Ohio is a "shall issue" state which means that once you meet all the requirements the county sheriff must issue a CCW license to you.

Ohio ccw classes

How long does it take to get a license?

The sheriff of each county in Ohio is responsible for issuing CCW licenses and has up to 45 days to issue or deny your license from the date you applied.  If your license is denied the sheriff is required to give you a written explanation of the denial.  There is an appeal process available if you are denied.

How much does the license cost?

The minimum cost of a CCW license in Ohio is $67.  This is for a 5 year resident.  Anyone who has resided in Ohio for less than 5 years is subject to an NICS background check which will cost an additional $24.  An Ohio CCW license is valid for 5 years.

Is Open Carry Permitted in Ohio?

Yes, open carry is legal in Ohio without a permit. However, open carry is not permitted in businesses that sell alcohol or in vehicles.

Can I Concealed Carry Other Weapons?

No, you cannot concealed carry any other weapons besides a handgun, but you can carry a taser, stun gun, and pepper spray without a permit.

Can Non-Residents Get A CCW?

Yes, non-residents to Ohio can get a CCW, but only if they are employed in Ohio.

Do I Have To Notify An Officer That I'm Carrying?

Yes, you must notify an officer if you are carrying a concealed weapon. Per Ohio's regulations you should be the following when pulled over:

  • Remain in the vehicle
  • Keep your hands in plain sight at all times
  • Inform the officer immediately that you are a CCW holder and are carrying a concealed weapon
  • Give the officer your permits and documents as requested

Are "No Weapons Allowed" Signs Enforced?

Yes, these signs are enforced in Ohio. The owner or individual in charge of the land may post a sign on their property, and those who violate the order knowingly will be reprimanded and charged with criminal trespassing and a misdemeanor in the fourth degree.

Can I Carry While Using Alcohol or Other Controlled Substances?

No, you are not allowed to be under the influence of alcohol or any other substances while carrying. Using alcohol or any other controlled substance can impair your judgment and have severe consequences if you are carrying.

Reciprocity with other states

When you obtain your Ohio CCW license you will also be allowed to carry in many other states.  This is because Ohio has reciprocity agreements with other states that have similar laws regarding concealed carry.  Check out this site for an Ohio reciprocity map.

Note: Before carrying in other states you need to call the attorney general of those states to make sure the reciprocity agreements are still valid.  You will also want to research the laws of those states regarding the use of deadly force.

Where can you not carry a concealed weapon?

You are allowed to carry in many places in Ohio but here is a list of places you are not allowed to carry.

  • Police stations
  • Sheriffs' offices
  • Highway patrol posts
  • Premises controlled by BCI
  • Correctional institutions or other detention facilities
  • Airport terminals or airplanes
  • Mental institutions
  • Courthouses
  • Universities, unless locked in a motor vehicle
  • Places of worship, unless you have received permission to carry there
  • Child day care centers
  • Some government facilities

  • Licensed class D liquor permit premises if you are consuming alcohol or are under the influence.

CHL Classes in Texas

CHL Classes Near You In Texas

Enter an address or zip code and click the find locations button.

Requirements to obtain a Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL) (Now called License to Carry LTC)

To get your Texas CHL you must be 21 years of age or be an active member or former member of the armed forces.  You must have a clean criminal record.  Any felony will disqualify you from getting a license as well as all class A and B misdemeanors.  For example, a DWI is at least a class B misdemeanor in Texas and you will not be able to apply for a CHL for 5 years after a DWI conviction.

You cannot be chemically dependent or of unsound mind.  Chemically dependent is defined as having two convictions within the last ten years relating to alcohol or a controlled substance with a grade of class B misdemeanor or higher.  Someone is considered of unsound mind if they have been diagnosed by a licensed physician with a psychiatric disorder, or declared by a court to be incompetent to manage one's own affairs.

You cannot be under a protective order or be delinquent in paying state or city taxes, governmental fees, or child support.  The concealed carry act was designed to encourage people to pay back taxes and child support.  You must also be able to pass a NICS check.  The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is implemented by the FBI and this is something you go through each time you purchase a gun from a dealer.

Finally you must complete an application and a training course.  The application may be completed on the Texas Department of Public Safety website.

How long does it take to get a Texas CHL

The Texas DPS is required by law to process your license in 60 days or less.  If they run into any additional questions such as prior convictions they may ask you to provide more information.  At this point they will have an additional 180 days to investigate and either issue or deny a license to you.

How much does the license cost

The typical license fees are $40 for a first time licensee and $40 to renew a concealed handgun license.  Certain people will qualify for discounted rates.  Click here to view the rate schedule.

What training do I need to have

Texas requires a training course that is a minimum of 4 hours long and a maximum of 6 hours long.  This was reduced from 10 to 15 hours by a bill passed in September of 2013.  There are four main topics covered in the class.

  1. Use of force
  2. Non-violent dispute resolution
  3. Handgun use
  4. Safe and proper storage of handguns and ammunition

Your instructor will require you to pass a written exam with a 70% score as well as a shooting proficiency test.  To pass the shooting test you must fire up to 50 rounds at distances of 3 yards, 7 yards, and 15 yards.  You will be shooting at a B27 target and will obtain points for hitting within certain rings.

  • 5 points - 8, 9, 10, and X rings
  • 4 points - 7 ring
  • 3 points - on the silhouette but outside the 7 ring
chl classes

You are allowed 3 tries to pass the shooting test and must have a minimum score of 175 points out of 250.

Reciprocity with other states

Texas has reciprocity agreements with many other states.  This means that with a Texas CHL you will be allowed to carry a concealed weapon in those states.  Be sure you understand the laws of any state you are carrying in because they can differ from the Texas laws that you learn in your chl classes.  Click here to see a map of Texas' reciprocity agreements.

Where can I carry

Once you have your Texas CHL you will be allowed to carry in many places.  Here is a list of places you are not allowed to carry a concealed handgun.

  • Governmental buildings and meetings
  • Amusement parks
  • Businesses that derive 51% or more of their revenue from sales of alcohol for on-premises consumption
  • Correctional facilities
  • Hospitals or nursing homes
  • Schools and universities and sporting events sponsored by high schools and universities
  • Professional sporting events
  • Churches or other places of worship

Concealed Carry Illinois Classes

concealed carry illinois classes

Concealed Carry Illinois Classes Near You

Enter an address or zip code and click the find locations button.

Illinois residents have been waiting for years to legally carry concealed weapons.  On July 9th 2013 Illinois passed public act 98-63 which became law 430 ILCS 66.  This law allows Illinois citizens to carry concealed handguns.  The requirements to get a CCL in Illinois are a little more stringent than many other states.  Read on to learn how to qualify for a license and where to find CCL instructors near you.

Shall Issue

Illinois is a "shall issue" state meaning that once you meet all the requirements to obtain a concealed carry license and no objections are filed by law enforcement, the Illinois State Police will issue a license to you.  This is in contrast to "may issue" states in which applicants must have a "good cause" to obtain a license.  Read more about "shall issue" versus "may issue" here.

What Will You Learn in Class?

Your instructor will probably start with gun safety.  You will learn how to properly clean and handle your weapon, including which chemicals to buy.  This may seem a little basic, but you will be taught the difference between a revolver and a semi-automatic.

At some point the instructor will move into portions of Illinois law that pertain to carrying a concealed handgun.  Even if law is boring to you listen carefully to this section, it might keep you from spending time in jail.  You need to understand the difference between self defense and murder in the eyes of Illinois law.  When traveling to other states you need to understand their laws.  Some states require a person to attempt a retreat before firing a shot.

concealed carry illinois classes

You are probably looking forward to the hands on weapon instruction and range time.  You will be taught how to stand and hold the weapon.  Short barreled weapons are difficult to aim but your instructor should teach you some best practices.  During the live fire portion of the course you will be shooting at a B27 target.  You must hit the scoring portion of the target 70% of the time to qualify.

Requirements to Qualify for a License
